Stefanos Vavilis World Champion – He wrote History for Greece in Grappling!

The gold medal at the World Men’s Grappling Championship, held in Serbia, was won by Stefanos Vavilis, making history for Greek sports! The Greek champion became the first athlete in the history of our country to climb to the highest step of the podium in a World Championship of the sport.

Competitive, mature and determined, Vavilis put in high-level performances at 71kg with Gi, making a flawless run to the top.

In his first match he won 5-0 against Akmentov (Independent Athlete). In the quarter-finals he defeated Poland’s Karczyński 5-0, confirming his superiority. In the semi-finals he prevailed 2-0 against the German Pulmemuller, ensuring the qualification to the final without losing a single point!

In the grand final, the Greek champion prevailed 2-1 over the Hungarian Lakatos, raising the Greek flag high and giving Greece the first gold medal in the history of Grappling.

The overall presence of the Greek delegation at the event was also excellent:

Yiannis Karyotakis and Angelos Nikolopoulos took 5th place,

Ilias Boukis finished 9th,

While Danny Dimopoulos was ranked 13th.
