Champagne producers in northeast France must find new markets following the threat of US President Donald Trump for 30% duties to EU exports.

Some producers propose Brazil, Southeast Asia and South Africa as new export destinations.

The US is the largest champagne market with 10% in volume and 15% in value, and producers argue that duties will raise prices for consumers and threaten jobs across the supply chain, including the United States, Reuters notes.

“The impact on champagne exports will be serious because they will mean loss of income from bottles sales,” said Stephane Vignon, whose family has produced champagne on Verzenay since 1946.

With 70% of sales of champagne today in just five countries, duties should push producers to look for new markets, said Maxime Toubart, president of the Comite Champagne Industrial Club.

However, replacement of sales in the US is not easy, he added.

“We can’t just say that we will sell three million less bottles in the US and sell them to Japan. In fact, there is no alternative today, “he concluded.
