The total number of cash -free payments in the eurozone in the second half of 2024 increased by 8.6% to 77.6 billion compared to the second half of 2023, with total value increasing by 3.8% to 116.9 trillion euros.

Card payments represented 57% of the total number of cash without cash in the second half of 2024, credit transfers to 21%, direct charges of 15% and electronic payments of 6%, according to a report by the European Central Bank.

The number of intact card payments in the second half of 2024 increased by 15.5% to 29.5 billion compared to the second half of 2023, with total value increasing by 15.1% to 0.8 trillion euros.

The number of cards in circulation at the end of the second half of 2024 increased by 8.2% to 750.0 million compared to the second half of 2023, with an average of 2.1 payments per euro resident and an average value of about EUR 39 per transaction with card.

About 56.1 billion transactions were carried out by retail payment systems in the euro area in the second half of 2024, worth 26.4 trillion euros.
