Canada will abolish many duties imposed as retaliation for US products and will intensify contact with the US to conclude a new trade agreement, Prime Minister Mark Karnni said on Friday.
Canadian duties on US cars, steel and aluminum will remain for the time being, he said in a press conference in Ottawa, Reuters said.
Carni noted that the United States had recently made it clear that they would not impose duties on Canadian products complying with the free trade agreement between the three US-Mexico-Canada countries, which characterized as a positive development.
“In this context, and according to Canada’s commitment to USMCA, I announce today that the Canadian government will respond to the United States by abolishing all Canadian duties on US products specifically covered by USMCA,” he noted.
“Canada and the US have now restored free trade for the overwhelming majority of our products,” he added, reiterating that, compared to its commercial partners, Canadian exports are still subject to a low level of duties from the US.
