Nord Stream2 pipeline on ice – What the German energy regulator announced | Skai.gr

by

The German energy regulator has announced the suspension of the certification process for the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

According to Reuters, the consortium said it was necessary to set up a company that would be subject to German law in order to qualify for the operating license.

“Certification for the operation of Nord Stream 2 will be considered when the administrator is established in a legal framework that is compatible with German law,” the statement said.

A controversial pipeline

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline, according to Deutsche Welle, will transport natural gas from Russia to Germany and other countries. Several countries have expressed opposition to the project, including the United States, which warns of a dangerous increase in Europe’s energy dependence on Russia.

Despite an initial U.S. dispute with the pipeline, the Biden administration last July halted efforts to block its operation through sanctions. Washington and Berlin have reached an agreement that provides for German support for Ukraine and a threat of sanctions against Russia if it is seen as trying to instrumentalize fuel deliveries.
