Average price of ethanol at gas stations is R$5 per liter, says ANP

by

The average price of hydrous ethanol at Brazilian gas stations remained high and ended the week at R$4,990 per liter, according to the ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels). The product can be found for up to R$ 7,899 per liter.

In one month, the average price of ethanol accumulates a rise of 7.4% at gas stations. The movement follows the rise in gasoline prices after the mega-increases announced by Petrobras on the 11th and reverses the downward curve that biofuel experienced at the beginning of the year.

The ANP also detected the third consecutive rise in the average price of gas cylinders in the country, which reached R$ 113.63 this week. It’s the highest since the agency began its weekly fuel price survey in 2004.

For the week, the increase was 0.3%. Since the 16.1% readjustment in refineries, the accumulated increase in the product at resellers is 11%.

The rise in prices worries the sector, which experienced a sharp drop in sales in 2021 and sees the scenario repeat itself at the beginning of 2022. previous weeks.

Gasoline prices were practically stable this week, down 0.1%. It was the second week of decline after the record reached the week after the refinery readjustment. According to the ANP, the average price of the product was R$ 7,202 per litre.

The agency found gasoline for up to R$8,499 per liter, R$0.45 less than the highest value verified last week.

Diesel had an increase of 0.4% in the week, reaching an average price of R$ 6,593 per liter. The value, however, is lower than the R$ 6,654 in force in the week following the increase in refineries. The ANP found the fuel being sold at R$7,979 per litre.

With the appreciation of the real and the drop in international oil prices in recent days, the price of gasoline in Brazilian refineries is already a little more expensive than import parity, a concept used by Petrobras in its fuel price policy.

According to data from Abicom (Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers), at the end of the trading session on Thursday (31), Brazilian gasoline cost, on average, R$ 0.04 per liter more than the amount needed to import the product from the U.S.

Diesel still remained R$ 0.08 per liter below the import parity price. This Friday, the dollar rate continued to fall, which may reverse this situation.

Petrobras announced the latest price adjustments for gasoline, diesel and cooking gas on the 11th, which led the final sales prices of the products to break records the following week, intensifying pressure on the state-owned company’s management.

Earlier this week, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) announced a change in command of Petrobras, with the resignation of General Joaquim Silva e Luna before completing one year in office. To replace him, the government appointed economist Adriano Pires.

The nomination will be evaluated by the oil company’s shareholders at a meeting on the 13th. As it has a majority of shares with votes, the government cannot be defeated.
