Kinder Egg recalled for fear of salmonella in UK

by

Italian confectionery group Ferrero recalled Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs from the British trade two weeks before Easter after a link was discovered between the product and dozens of reported cases of salmonella.

The recall affects the Kinder Surprise Egg in single and multi-packs. The product is a popular confection, aimed at the children’s market, and contains a small plastic toy inside a chocolate egg.

“We are voluntarily recalling batches of Kinder Surprise as a precautionary measure because we have been made aware of a possible connection to several reported cases of salmonella,” the recall notice released by the company announces.

The news comes at a time when confectionery makers are scrambling for space on supermarket shelves in the days leading up to Easter, which many people in the UK celebrate through the purchase and consumption of chocolate.

The FSA (Food Standards Agency), the UK food watchdog, has advised consumers not to eat the affected products, which have an expiration date of between 11 July and 7 October.

At least 57 cases of illness linked to the products have been identified, the agency said, and those affected include several young children.

“We know that these specific products are popular with young children, especially as Easter approaches, so we urge parents and guardians of children to check if any products they already own and home are affected by this recall,” said Tina Potter. , incident director for the FSA.
