Britain urgently calls for “clarifications” by the European Commission As for the quotas on steel imports announced today. Prime Minister Kir Starmer said his government is in “discussions” with Brussels.
The Commission has today suggested that steel imports that are not subject to duties be reduced by almost half and double the duties for the rest to safeguard European steelmaking.
British steelworks fears that EU proposed duties are a “existential threat” to it and the impact of the measures will even go beyond those duties imposed by US President Donald Trump on the sector.
When asked if Britain is asking for it to be excluded, Starmer declined to give more clarifications, not only noting that he would support the sector and “we will tell you more in due course”.
“I will not go into details but I will clearly tell you that, as you would expect, we are discussing it with the EU and the US,” he told reporters who accompany him to India.
Britain reached an agreement with Trump in May and pays 25%(instead of 50%) for steel exporting to the US, with its aim to reach 0%.
Industry Minister Chris McDonald said London is “pushing the European Commission” to give urgent clarifications on the impact that its decision will have in the United Kingdom.
It should be noted that earlier, the NTB news agency, citing Norwegian Foreign Minister Espin Bart Eidte, reported that the country was excluded from the EU’s proposal for duties in imported steel.
