Without an agreement with the government for a salary adjustment, Central Bank employees approved, in a meeting on Tuesday afternoon (12), the continuation of the strike indefinitely.
The decision was supported by 80% of the 1,300 employees who participated in the deliberation.
Before the assembly, members of the three representative entities of BC servers met with the director of Administration of the municipality, Carolina de Assis Barros. The president of the monetary authority, Roberto Campos Neto, did not attend the meeting.
“Campos Neto will only meet us when he has a concrete proposal to present to the category. Therefore, he has not committed himself to any more meetings”, said the president of Sinal (National Union of Central Bank Employees), Fábio Faiad.
Employees have been talking about intensifying the strike, which began on April 1, affecting preparatory activities linked to Copom (Monetary Policy Committee) and Comef (Financial Stability Committee). The next Copom meeting is scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd of May, while the Comef meeting is scheduled for the 26th of May.
The mobilization of BC officials has caused a series of delays in the monetary authority’s routine, especially in the dissemination of financial indicators, such as the Focus bulletin, the exchange flow, economic-financial notes, the calculation of the daily ptax (exchange rate) and others.
Last Friday (8), the BC announced that the IBC-Br (Economic Activity Index of the Central Bank), the savings report and other data would not be released this week due to the strike. “In due course, we will inform you with 24 hours in advance the new dates for the disclosures”, he communicated.
The lack of information for the second week in a row has already started to leave the market without reference about the direction of the Brazilian economy, say analysts.
The implementation of the digital currency pilot project, scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year, is also expected to be delayed due to the strike. The change in the schedule was mentioned by Campos Neto in an event on Monday (11).
“We have several projects already being amalgamated in a pilot project process that should start in the fourth quarter of 2022. Now, with the strike event, we had a small postponement, but this does not change our medium and long-term plans It’s important to follow this path”, he said.
With no readjustment in the last three years, BC servers ask for salary recomposition of 26.3% and career restructuring of analysts and technicians. As for the non-salary agenda, employees want a change in the nomenclature from analyst to auditor, for example, and a higher education requirement for BC technicians to join.
The discontent of BC servers grew after President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) waved an increase only to federal police, a category that makes up his support base.
With the monetary authority employees’ strike, other areas have increased pressure on the government for salary recomposition. The amount available in the Budget to raise the remuneration of civil servants is R$ 1.7 billion.
