Deans of private universities and specialists in the private higher education market will discuss proposals for Fies (Fund for Financing Higher Education Students) and other topics at the next sector meeting this month, which should result in the document to be given to candidates of this year’s elections.
Celso Niskier, dean of Unicarioca and president of Abmes (Brazilian Association of Supporters of Higher Education), says that he has on the agenda a suggestion to change the current financing model.
The idea is that the contemplated student, after graduating, starts paying the debt only when he has some kind of income, and that the value of the installments varies according to the salary received, and can be interrupted if he is not able to.
“Often, this young person cannot find a job due to market instability or the job does not provide the income [necessária] so that he can pay his entire debt”, he says.
In addition to Fies, Niskier says companies also intend to present their ideas for tax reform. He cites concern about the impact that an increase in the sector’s tax burden could have on C and D students.
Other topics to be discussed are new lines of financing to stimulate innovation for universities and the modernization of systems for evaluating and supervising higher education.
