Airfares rise twice as much as inflation in Brazil

by

While the general rise in prices affects everyone in Brazil, the price of airfare has seen a much wider rise, which affects the recovery of the sector and inhibits people from travelling.

The rise in aviation fuel occurs globally, reaching 11.6% on average, according to IATA data. This has a direct impact on the price of airline tickets.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the increase in aviation kerosene, used by jets and turboprops, was 14.6% from the first week of April to May. In the US and Canada, this increase reached 9.6% in the same period.

As the main component of the cost of airlines in the country, fuel has pushed up the price of tickets. In the US, the rise reached 18.6% from March to April, while inflation was around 8%, according to data from the Labor Department.

The situation is similar in Brazil, with an increase of almost double the official inflation. According to IBGE data, the increase in air tickets is 9.48%, while the IPCA, the main inflation index, accumulates a high in 2022 of 4.29%.

The rises are expected to continue in the coming months, with the proximity of school holidays in both countries (and therefore increased demand for flights) and as there is still no clear short-term resolution to the Ukrainian War.
