Agricultural areas in Paraná have frost forecast, but risks would be limited

by

Agricultural areas in Paraná could be hit by frost on Tuesday (17) and Wednesday (18), when intense cold can also occur in higher regions of southern Minas Gerais, which brings some concern for corn crops. and coffee, among others, according to meteorological information on Monday (16).

For now, however, meteorologists and specialists expect that the frosts will not affect corn areas in a broad way, which could result in problems only in low-lying and isolated regions, without any relevant impact on production.

Tuesday should register light frosts in a wide range that goes from the east, some areas from the north to the south of Paraná, while the phenomenon may have moderate intensity in part of central-southern Paraná, according to information from Simepar, an organ of the Paraná that performs climate projections.

On Wednesday, according to Simepar, a larger area is expected to have light frosts, while moderate frosts are restricted to a strip further to the center-south.

For the corn specialist from Deral (Department of Rural Economy) Edmar Gervásio, the possibility of frost is in the south of Paraná, “more specifically in regions that are traditionally cooler like Palmas and General Carneiro”, and “there is no relevant planting of corn in these regions”.

“At this time, this forecast should not have any impacts,” he said.

Asked about indications of frost also in western Paraná, he stated that the forecast in these areas is of “low intensity”.

“If it happens, it’s usually in low-lying and isolated regions, and in general it doesn’t affect corn crops.”

Paraná projects a record second corn crop of 16 million tons, up from 5.7 million tons last season, when drought and frost cut production.

Rural Clima’s agrometeorologist Marco Antônio dos Santos agrees with the Deral specialist’s assessment.

“The week will be marked by extreme cold, tomorrow [terça-feira]very cold, in high regions to the south of Paraná, Guarapuava, Pato Branco, Francisco Beltrão, as well as Ponta Grossa region, in Campos Gerais do Paraná”, said Santos, in a bulletin.

According to him, the forecast for the south of Mato Grosso do Sul and west of Paraná is “a marginal temperature for frost”.

“Some lowland regions, which accumulate a lot of cold, may have an impact, next Tuesday, as well as on Wednesday”, he declared.

On Wednesday, the cold hits areas of southern Minas Gerais, bringing concerns to areas with altitudes above a thousand meters.

“The cold is more intense (in these areas) and there may be mild frosts. Coffee may have frostbite, I do not rule out this possibility”, he said, explaining that, if it occurs, the phenomenon would only impact the external areas of the plant. and the upper leaves.

Concerns about coffee come after plantations in Minas Gerais were hit hard by frost last year.

Santos also commented that this cold is unusual for the third week of May.
