McDonald’s agrees to sell stores in Russia

by

McDonald’s has reached an agreement to sell its establishments in Russia to local businessman Alexander Govor, owner of several franchises in the chain, the company said on Thursday (19).

The announcement comes three days after McDonald’s made its exit from the Russian market official after the invasion of Ukraine. Govor agreed to keep the employees for at least two years, the fast food company said.

The value of the transition was not revealed.

McDonald’s said on Monday it was putting up its entire Russian chain of 850 restaurants that employ 62,000 people, due to the humanitarian crisis following the invasion of Ukraine, which also triggered international sanctions against Russia.

“Business in Russia is no longer sustainable or consistent with McDonald’s values,” the company said in a statement.

Govor, franchisor since 2015, operates 25 restaurants in Siberia. He is a co-founder of Neftekhimservice, a refinery, and a member of the board of directors of another company that owns the Park Inn hotel and private clinics in Siberia.

The American group indicated on Monday that it will record in its accounts a cost associated with this withdrawal, from US$ 1.2 billion (R$ 5.9 billion) to US$ 1.4 billion (R$ 6.9 billion). .

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine on February 24. Several Western countries have imposed unprecedented sanctions on Moscow, prompting the departure of foreign companies including H&M, Starbucks and Ikea.
