President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) called billionaire Elon Musk a myth of freedom in a brief speech he made alongside him during an event at the Fasano Boa Vista hotel in Porto Feliz (SP).
“The purchase of Twitter for us here was like a breath of hope”, said the president, adding that “freedom is the seed of the future”.
Musk announced at the end of April his intention to buy the social network for US$ 44 billion (R$ 216.4 billion). The negotiation encouraged far-right groups, which were more penalized on the platform for disseminating false content in relation to public health (as in several episodes of the Covid-19 vaccine) and electoral processes.​
Bolsonaro also said that Musk’s intention to connect the Amazon with satellite internet could help to show the “reality” about the region, referring to forest preservation, criticized during his tenure.
He quoted the gospel “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free”.
Musk and Bolsonaro participated in an event on connectivity in the Amazon, organized by Fábio Faria, Minister of Communications.
The event is closed to the press. Bolsonaro arrived at 10:33 am, got out of the car and greeted almost all the police officers present who were doing their security at the place. He did not speak to journalists. His speech was broadcast by an advisor on social media.
In addition to businessmen such as Luciano Hang, from Havan, and Flávio Rocha, from Riachuelo, ministers General Heleno, Ciro Nogueira, Carlos França and Paulo Sérgio are also taking part in the event, which will include lunch.
In November last year, the Ministry of Communications announced that it had entered into a partnership with SpaceX, which sells technology for transport and communications, to connect remote areas of Brazil with low-altitude satellites.
The ministry said that the implementation of the program would begin in 2022. The partnership for low-orbit satellites does not depend on a bidding process, and can be closed through an administrative process at Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency).
SpaceX has already applied for a license to the municipality. The amounts involved in the partnership have not been revealed so far.
