Julianne Moore, Sandra Oh, Margaret Atwood and Lynne Ramsay. The names of these four women will be found in a new film, Stone Mattress, which despite being based on an Atwood story released in 2014, seems extremely relevant today.
Stone Mattress will take us to the Arctic
More specifically, Julianne Moore is going to play Verna, a 60-year-old retired physiotherapist, who, being a widow twice, decides to take a long cruise ship trip to the Arctic. This ship is of course full of young influencers or wealthy older retirees.
Among them is an elegant and charming woman, Grace, who will be played by Sandra Oh. Soon, the two women meet Bob Goreman, a gentleman who bears no resemblance to the others on this ship. Verna immediately realizes and remembers Bob from her past as a bad memory. But he, ignoring their older acquaintance, seeks to get closer to Verna. Bob, completely unsuspecting, has no idea that on this cruise the woman who has charmed him is plotting her revenge against him.
Verna is facing the traumas of the past
Something tells us that this story will lead to a well-made murder mystery. Without knowing more details about the story and having seen movies like Promising Young Woman, we already know that Stone Mattress will be much more relevant than one would expect.
At a time when autonomy and the right to self-determination for women are in danger of becoming demanded, rather than a given, Stone Mattress comes to tell a familiar, chaotic but powerful story. Women like the heroine of the story had to hide a lot under the rug because of their gender. All this is going to be explored by this new film that will soon start shooting in Iceland and Greenland.
