In the first post-pandemic winter, the happiness of being able to return to the streets and celebrate life is wide open in the vibrant colors and in the brightness of the clothes of those who came out of the darkness of social isolation. It’s dopamine dressing, a fashion trend that makes a reference to dopamine, the neurotransmitter that promotes the feeling of happiness.
“Whenever the world goes through major crises, such as wars and the pandemic, fashion reflects the opposite on the catwalks, it’s like an escape valve”, says Edilma Queiroz, professor at the fashion faculties of Senac and Faap.
She explains that dopamine dressing is all about that moment of coming back to freedom: people want to expose themselves, to release their emotions. They are looking for well-being. “Fashion comes out of that gloomy thing, black, and gives an explosion of colors and shapes, of joy, precisely to counter this moment, which was difficult. It’s something like ‘I’m going to celebrate life again'”, she says.
Fashion consultant and presenter Arlindo Grund gives more details about this trend. He explains that, following the same reasoning, clothes with more playful prints for children are on the rise. In adults, monochromatic looks came with force, including accessories. In the color palette, pink, cobalt blue and lime – a shade above the sad pistachio of last winter.
“Dopamine is nothing more than a reflection of what people are wanting, this need to spill,” says Grund. He adds that blends once considered true fashion transgressions are now very welcome. Sportswear with tailoring? He can. Or rather, must. And if they are in vibrant colors, even better.
Grund says that this trend gained strength with experiments carried out at home during the pandemic, mixing wardrobe pieces, the famous let-me-remember-what-I-have-in-the-closet. “A sweatshirt coat with a bonnet can be used with a blazer beautifully, with the hood out. It will give a style, a different bossa”, he ventures.
Stylist Marcia Jorge goes further and includes sparkles to this new fashion trend. Do you want a greater exaltation of happiness than metallic clothes and accessories, in lurex, sequins and rhinestones?. The idea, according to Marcia, is to wear complete looks with this “arrived” vibe – even during the day.
