The emblematic island of Delos – cosmopolitan center of the Mediterranean in antiquity, and now an open museum – comes to life on May 30, through the official launch of the international initiative “ALPHA MISSION – DELOS” which begins in parallel with the “ARTEMIS MISSION” of NAS . It is an international cross-sectoral initiative, based in Greece, that combines mythology with art, technology and space and aims to raise awareness of the climate crisis and the urgent need for global action.

“Delos gives us a scene in which we can all meet – not necessarily on the island, but anywhere in the world,” said the president of the World Human Forum (WHF), Alexandra Mitsotaki, in a press conference held today at the Athens Concert Hall in his presence. Undersecretary of Culture and Sports, in charge of Contemporary Culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakis and Undersecretary of Environment and Energy, George Amyras. “This seed that we planted in Delos last year, this year allowed us to do something creative, bigger, with more partners. We are interested in creating knowledge, in creating a new generation of people who will understand that it will depend on us if we save this one planet we have. “All these discussions can and should take place in Delos,” added the president of the World Human Forum.

The internationally renowned Greek astrophysicist, Stamatis Krimizis stressed that this is an experience that will help us understand in great depth the ability of humanity to sustain the planet earth. “I hope that through this initiative we will all become aware of the importance of the environment and how we will tackle climate change.”

Academic Costas Synolakis referred to the need to protect cultural heritage sites from climate change through coordinated efforts by the world community. The curator of antiquities of the Cyclades, Dimitris Athanasoulis, said that Delos deserves to be at the center of international interest for the values it stands for, while he also spoke about the ancient monuments which are already affected by the climate crisis and rising sea levels. “This initiative attempts to connect ancient Delos with the 21st century. “Through it we can understand that Delos is not just a unique archaeological site, but it is a site that concerns us all today,” he said.

An international concert

For the first time, Delos hosts a classical music orchestra in a concert of international scope and great symbolic value. The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) together with Ukrainian and Russian musicians and soloists, the Ukrainian star, rising star, Diana Tishchenko (violin) and the Greek craftsman Socrates Sinopoulos (lyre), participate in the concert entitled “The [αβέβαιες] Four Seasons “designed specifically to highlight the uncertainty about the future of the planet if we do not act immediately.

The concert will be broadcast live (20:30 EEST) on ARTE, ERT and will be shown on a giant screen in the garden of the Athens Concert Hall, on the website and social media of the Concert Hall and in various cities in Europe. The lyre will masterfully tie in with the work of Vivaldi and contemporary composers.

“Floating Autumn” by Carmen Fizzarotti from “[αβέβαιες] Four Seasons “is an algorithmic recomposition of Vivaldi’s” Autumn “. Developed by composers, musicians, climatologists and computer scientists, using geospatial climate forecasts for 2050, it illustrates what a future world might look like if we did not reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.[Uncertain] Four Seasons ”is an initiative of AKQA and Jung von Matt, composer Hugh Crosthwaite, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Monash Climate Change Communications Research Hub.

A few words about “ALPHA MISSION – DELOS”

NASA’s ARTEMIS mission will transport the first woman to the Moon by 2025, after the APOLLO mission that carried the first man to the moon in 1969. Delos is the island where, according to legend, the twin gods Apollo and Artemis were born. and where the light was born. For many centuries in antiquity, Delos was the cosmopolitan center of the Mediterranean. Today, the whole island is an open-air museum and the ancient monuments are already affected by the climate crisis and rising sea levels.

“Along with our effort to explore space, Delos – and the events that will be associated with it – will be constant reminders that the wings also need roots and that the healing of our planet must be a priority. NASA’s Artemis mission, after the Apollo mission, gives us the unique opportunity to understand that humanity will not be able to adequately meet the challenges if it does not combine the wisdom of the past with the knowledge and capabilities of today, the humanities with science, mythology, art and spirituality with space and technology “note the organizers of” ALPHA MISSION – DELOS “.
