The new big summer production of the National Opera, his dark masterpiece Giuseppe Verdi “Rigoletto”, conducted by Loukas Karytinos and directed by Katerina Evangelatou, will be presented on 2, 5, 8 and 11 June 2022 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. The production is implemented with the support of his donation Stavros Niarchos Foundation (ISN) to enhance the artistic extroversion of the National Opera.
THE “Rigolettos” is considered one of the most popular operas in the repertoire. In this work, which was first presented before 171 years in Venice, Verdi changes page in his synthetic path and presents a composition with a clear stigma and increased mood for experimentation. The transitions between lyrical and dramatic scenes ensure the continuous flow of the story with great speed. “Innovation of music, style, form of songs. “Wonderful work of the orchestration: this orchestra speaks, weeps, moves”, writes the day after Rigoletto’s world first, on March 12, 1851, the Italian critic Tomaso Locatelli.

The story is about her love Gildasdaughter of the humble courtier jester Rigoletto, for her released duke Mantova, who is presented to her as a poor student. In order to avenge the lost honor of his daughter, Rigolettos plots assassination of the duke. Discovering her father’s plans, Gilda decides to save her beloved and sacrifice herself, taking his place.
For the new production of “Rigoletto”, the National Opera assigned the direction to the distinguished director and artistic director of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, Katerina Evangelatou. After her very successful first collaboration with ELS in the contemporary opera “Z”, Evangelatou comes to face this great work of the operatic repertoire on the stage of special requirements of the Conservatory of Herodes Atticus. Evolving her recognizable directorial identity, Katerina Evangelatou will try to illuminate the contradictory, dark personality of Rigoletto’s character, transferring the story of the play to the corrupt society of the Italian countryside of the 1980s.
The director notes about her directorial approach: “The cycle of violence that Verdi describes in Rigoletto is transferred to the microcosm of the Italian countryside of the 1980s, where organized crime prevails. Corruption, crime and rape are the real face of a religious, conservative and precautionary society. The setting of Eva Manidaki – a timeless mansion of the Italian countryside, which hides the brutality and darkness of the heroes of the play – is perfectly integrated into the natural stage of the Herodion, while the costumes of Alan Hranitel complement the image a declining society. “

Conducted by the eminent chief musician and artistic director of the Athens State Orchestra, Loukas Karytinos. In the role of the Duke of Mantua the distinguished Italian tenor Francesco Demuro, who has performed the role in the Metropolitan Opera of New York, National Opera of Paris, Real Madrid, Arena of Verona, Opera of San Francisco, Z San Francisco, Z. Frankfurt, while in 2022 he performed at the Royal Opera House in London and the Vienna State Opera. Gilda is played by the international career soprano Christina Poulitsi, who has played the role of the leading chief musician Zubin Meta in Florence. Sparafoutsile is played by Petros Magoulas and Mandalena by Mary-Ellen Nezi. With them, distinguished and younger soloists such as Margarita Syggeniotou, Dimitris Kassioumis, Nikos Kotenidis, Giannis Kalyvas, George Matthaiakakis, Diamantis Kritsotakis, Petros Salatas and Evita Chiotis.
