Amber Heard, 36, can count on fans to help pay the $8.35 million she owes Johnny Depp, 58, after being convicted of defamation in a US court. At least, several of them have already shown a willingness to do so.
A page on GoFundMe, which specializes in fundraising campaigns, was taken down after raising US$1 million (almost R$5 million) for this purpose. According to the website TMZ, upon discovering that it was a fake campaign, the platform itself ended the endeavor.
The page would have been created by a person who identified herself as Kimberly Moore. She claimed that she had contacted the actress’ legal team and promised that all the money raised would be to pay off the legal debt.
“I believe Amber and social media protected the abuser,” the campaign text read. “The trial exceeds his net worth. It’s so sad he was able to get away with the abuse. The trial promotes this abuse. If you can help it.”
However, GoFundMe representatives ended the campaign when they discovered that neither Amber Heard nor anyone on her team had created the page. The platform says that it will keep an eye on fake campaigns to act quickly and that it will only air those created by someone linked to the actress or authorized by her.
Lawyer Elaine Bredehoft said Heard “absolutely cannot” pay damages. She also said that the next step for the actress – who received US$ 2 million (R$ 9.6 million) – will be to appeal the verdict.
