Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by paralysis of the facial nerve and a rash on the ear or shingles in the mouth, and can cause dizziness or even hearing loss.

It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox and belongs to the herpes virus family. In cases of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, the previously dormant chickenpox virus – “shingles” “wakes up” and spreads to affect the facial nerve.

Treatment is usually with antiviral drugs, steroids and painkillers. The chances of a full recovery are better if treatment is started early. If the treatment is given within three days of the onset of symptoms, about 70% of people fully recover.
