Performances took place in the ancient theater of Dodoni from August 1960 until the summer of 1998. Then the Ministry of Culture decided that the theater should stop being given to Dodonaia by the Society for Continental Studies, due to the sensitivity of the material from which it is made. the theater, maintenance and restoration work had to proceed.
With a big one concert of the Boston Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, was performed to the public yesterday, World Music Day, at the bottom of the concave of the ancient theater of Dodoni, after its restoration.
As the Minister of Culture and Sports said, Lina Mendoni, at the event, which took place in the presence of the Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Costas Tassoulas, “Today the Ministry of Culture and Sports delivers to the people of Epirus and to all visitors to Epirus, Greeks and foreigners, this unique monument, the ancient theater of Dodoni, the lower part of the hollow, while the restoration work continues.”
In the ancient theater of Dodoni performances took place from August 1960 to the summer of 1998. At that time, the Ministry of Culture decided that the theater should be stopped for Dodonaia to the Continental Studies Society, as due to the sensitivity of the material from which the theater was built, maintenance and restoration work had to proceed. Lina Mendoni referred to the reactions caused by the termination of the concession of the theater and the need for restoration work. “Monuments need care”, he said. «At some point they enter the intensive care unit and no one approaches them as they do not approach the people who are in the intensive care unit. But then, 99.9% come out resurrected. The monument is what its word says, it emits memory and memory is directly connected to the past but also to the present and the future. Because without memory and without monuments, the future is uncertain and ominous. After a lot of work of the executives of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, external collaborators, academic teachers, who collaborated intensively and for a long time, we reached the result, which we are all happy today. Had it not been for this time, the long time of 22 years of silence, but of creative archaeological work, the monument simply would not have existed. We would have lost our memory, we would have lost a piece of our DNA and identity. Today we are really very happy. We all want monuments to be alive, socialized, integrated into our daily lives. Because monuments live, not when they are cared for by experts, but when people love them. This is the real protection».
Lina Mendoni also mentioned in the restoration work of five ancient theaters of Epirus (Dodoni, Gitanon, Amvrakia, Kassopi, Nikopolis) which is in progress with funding from the Epirus Regional Development Plan – NSRF 2014-2020, as well as the Cultural Route of Epirus, which was designed by the Ministry of Culture in 2013 with the Epirus Region, and which is directly related to the tourism development of the whole area.
As he underlined “monuments are the resources and poles of sustainable development. Exterior economies are developed around the monuments and archeological sites, which help the development of the place, the local economy, the local society. Greece is a blessed place and has a unique qualification. To be able to combine the cultural heritage of centuries with modern creation. This combination allows experts new readings of monuments and artists unique and unrepeatable experiences, but also an essential source of inspiration. At the same time, a quality festival within an archeological site is a determining factor for local and regional development.».
The Speaker of Parliament, Costas Tassoulas, said that “It is a big day for Epirus as the lower cornice is attributed to use after 22 years of work and efforts”, while he noted that the excavation at the Bouleuterion, at the archeological site of Dodoni will be funded by the Greek Parliament.
The project of restoration and promotion of the ancient theater of Dodoni, budget 4,790,500 euros, which was completed with funding from the Regional Operational Program of Epirus 2014-2020 and using innovative methods, will continue, after the recent opinion of the KAS, with maintenance work of the middle molding “.
