The building on the shore of Serifos recalls memories of its old use that resonate in its rooms, which are now filled with works of art, ancient and modern

The conversion of the historic hostel “Perseus” in Serifos as a museum with the Archaeological Collection of Serifos and the exhibition of contemporary artists inspired by the legend of Perseus inaugurates on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at 17.30, the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni. As stated in a relevant announcement Ephorate of Antiquities of Cycladesthe decommissioned building of Perseus Serifos, work of the architect Filippou Vokou of 1962-63, a typical example of modern architecture with the characteristic typology of Xenia, which has been partially granted by the Municipality of Serifos to the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, is revived: the hostel’s clothes are taken off to wear that of the museum. The project will be implemented gradually, based on the concept of “clothing” – “clothing”, which, in addition to the change of use, also refers to the architectural transformation required by the renovation, to highlight the synthetic principles and elements of the historic building, in the light of its new use.

While the new garment is being prepared, the building on the shores of Serifos recalls memories of its old use that resonate in its rooms, which are now filled with works of art, ancient and modern. Uses and memories are intertwined. The double periodical exhibition aims at highlighting the birth conversion project into a museum of the historian Xenia, by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, with its performance to the public. “Perseus” gradually regains its old glory, as a museum now, and converses with the art objects it hosts. The myth of Perseus is the thread of the narrative, the occasion for a tour of the space and the connecting link between the building and the two separate exhibitions it hosts: the Archaeological Collection of Serifos and the periodical exhibition of works by contemporary artists entitled “Perseus – From Sheriff in the stars “.
