Fans of singer Halsey, 27, left a concert in Arizona after the artist gave a speech about abortion rights. The position came after the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, federal law guaranteeing abortion in the US.
Halsey encouraged her audience to take a stand against the decision and said her “heart breaks” looking at people who “deserve the right to health and the right to choose”. “Some of the people I’m looking at right now are going to need an abortion one day, and you deserve it,” she continued.
“Whether it’s a life-threatening situation or not, you deserve it. And here in Arizona, you have to promise me that you will do this work so that the person on your left and right has that right for the rest of their lives.” the artist.
After the speech, an audience member tweeted: “The amount of people who just walked out of the Halsey concert after the nightmare when she talked about the abortion was sick. Fight for what’s right.” The artist responded to the tweet saying that the “disadvantage of making places outdoors: no door to reach them on the way out”.
The singer even countered people who said they paid to hear her sing, and not her opinion. “No, you paid to see me use a stage for expression in any way I choose. Sorry, you don’t have the critical thinking to realize that the rhetorical power of music doesn’t always serve your escapism.”
