The Chess Club in Chatron, near Nantes has announced that it has built the king’s pawn weighing almost 4.2 tonnes to commemorate the 20th International Chess Open taking place these days in the city.

The chessboard is made from more than 768 pieces of French wood and took more than 700 hours to build, the Group said.

The French Chess Federation shared on Twitter photos of the pessus being assembled.

As of 2018, the Guinness World Record for the largest pawn is held by the World Chess Museum, in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, with a 6-meter-high structure.

The French city’s Chess Club has announced plans to submit evidence to the Guinness Book of World Records to have its pawn officially recognized as the world’s largest.
