At 16, ex-The Voice Kids will be Alcione in a musical: ‘Reference for black women’

by

There were about 2,000 applicants and 300 candidates participating in the auditions, and it gave Carol Roberto, 16, at the head. A former participant in The Voice Kids in 2019, the singer and actress impressed those responsible for the cast by playing “Strange Madness” and won the role she always dreamed of: she will be the teenage Alcione in the show “Brown, the Musical”. The play debuts in August, in celebration of the artist’s 50th anniversary.

Despite still being a teenager, Carol is quite familiar with the singer’s repertoire, which is always present in the playlists of her family’s parties and barbecues, in Guarulhos (São Paulo), where she lives. “Back at home, people almost freaked out when they heard I passed the audition,” she recalls.

Carol doesn’t know Alcione personally. Still. She has the greatest faith that Marrom, 74, will go to the theater to watch the musical, written and directed by Miguel Falabella. When (and if) that happens, touché! the actress will not miss the opportunity to declare herself to Marrom. “I’m going to tell her how important her music is and how it moves people. She is a great reference for us singers, and especially black women like me,” she says.

Until then, he maintains a very demanding rehearsal routine: there are at least seven hours of vocal and body preparation every day. A quarry, which is just not tougher because, at least when it comes to decorating the letters, it has a refreshment. “I’ve always liked everything she sings, I hear it straight through, so that was the easiest part for me.”

Even with all this preparation, Carol is aware that, for being so original, Brown is almost “inimitable”. Therefore, she will play the singer in her youth, inspired by her, obviously, but without pretending to look the same. “I’ll try to pay tribute to her, because Alcione is unique.”

This isn’t Carol’s first time in a musical. Graduated from the Teenbrodway theater school, she has participated in “Achados e Perdidos”, directed by Cininha de Paula, and “Natal”, by Fernanda Chamma. Three years ago she became nationally known when she reached the semifinals of the musical reality show The Voice Kids, in Carlinhos Brown’s team. After that, she recorded the EP “Hora do Show” and the DVD “Sessions Carol Roberto”, in partnership with the pagode singer Rodriguinho.

Carol is also a voice actor, and lent her voice to the lioness Nala, as a child in the live-action Disney’s “Lion King”. The work opened the door to other opportunities with dubbing, in Disney’s “Mira – The Detective of the Kingdom” (2019), and “Family in Concert (Netflix). In 2022, she joined the cast of the series “7 Chances To…” (Discovery+).
