All the secrets for soft lips in winter, according to a dermatologist

by

It is a fact that our lips suffer in winter. Low temperatures often dry them out more, intensifying the need for rich hydration. Combined with good hydration, lip exfoliation is another habit worth adopting.

But because there are many alternative products, scrubs and peels and we often do not know what is the best method of exfoliation and care of our lips, we turned to the dermatologist and venereologist Dr. Valia Mousatou.

What does lip exfoliation offer us and what is its place in a proper treatment routine?

Most women, even the most meticulous with their beauty routine, often neglect to take care of their lips on a daily basis. On the contrary, they take care of them only when they see them already cracked and distressed. But it is a great benefit to add exfoliation to our daily grooming routine. Combining an exfoliating product with a moisturizing product is the secret to soft and smooth lips at all times.

However, it is better to avoid daily lip exfoliation. But even if we exfoliate our lips twice a week, we have a visible improvement from the first uses.

Is it better to use a lip peeling product or a scrub and why?

Scrubs do mechanical exfoliation due to the microgranules they contain, while peels are based on the chemical exfoliation caused by alpha and β-hydroxy acids. The choice depends on the personal preference of each. In any case, however, a rich moisturizing product needs to follow.

We often see lip exfoliation products with mandelic, lactic or salicylic acid. For what needs would you recommend each of the above acids?
Mandelic and lactic are α-hydroxy acids with mandelic producing exfoliation while lactic acid hydration and softness. Salicylic acid is β-hydroxy acid with exfoliating properties as well.

Can we use the same product for facial and lip exfoliation or is it better to get a product specifically for the lips?

Because the lips have thinner skin it is good not to use the same exfoliating products as the rest of the face. This is because they can be irritating to the lips and dry them out or irritate them more.

What are the best ways to prevent and treat chapped lips?

To prevent cracking of the lips, moisturize them regularly with nutritious products, even with Vaseline, especially if it is cold and move around for a long time. Even better we can cover them with the scarf if we stay exposed for a long time. We also use sunscreen on the lips as we usually forget about it, while we avoid licking them, as this dries them extra. We do not forget their hydration after make-up removal, especially if we have worn matte lipstick. We also avoid injuring them by pulling the cracks. Also, avoid irritants such as lemon and vinegar when they are already irritated. At the same time, we choose hypo-allergenic lip products if some lipsticks cause dermatitis. In addition, we drink plenty of water according to our needs.

Also, if the atmosphere is very dry, it is good to use a dehumidifier. Finally, when we visit the dentist, we apply Vaseline on the corners of the lips to avoid cheilitis, which is caused when the mouth is stretched too much and for a long time.
