A prosecutor has appealed to the US Supreme Court against the overturning conviction of comedian Bill Cosby, 84, after the actor was found guilty in 2018 of sexual assault.
“The United States Supreme Court can correct what we believe to be a serious error,” Kevin Steele, district attorney for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, said in a statement.
“Ask that [a Suprema Corte] reexamine [o caso] it’s the right thing to do,” said Kevin Steele, before denouncing the possible “disastrous consequences” of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision.
The appeal was filed on November 24th. In June, the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court overturned a conviction against the actor for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia mansion in 2004.
The artist has been in detention since 2018. The court ruled that Cosby was denied a fair trial and released him after serving more than two years of his three- to 10-year sentence.
The court did not acquit him, but overturned the conviction on a procedural issue. Cosby’s release provoked an uprising by #MeToo activists.
In its ruling, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court recalled that the first prosecutor in the case decided not to prosecute Cosby on criminal grounds, and urged him to file a civil suit, which the actor accepted.
During the hearing, Cosby acknowledged that he administered a powerful sedative to Andrea Constand and that he had grope her, considering he was doing it with the woman’s permission because she did not react.
