Nafplio surprises us with a bunch of special events that will take place on August 2, 3 and 4. Their theme is Karagiozis, only it is a Karagiozis who differs from the usual as he moves through paths that are out of the ordinary. Through an exhibition of figures and scenery that, instead of being exhibited in a “normal” room, come to life in berets set up in an O.S.E. wagon. at the square. Then with a colorful bilingual Greek and English catalog of the Vassilis Papantoniou Foundation and the Topos publishing house entitled “I, Karagiozis 1922-2022″ traveling a century by train”.
The catalog presents part of the Foundation’s shadow theater collection, together with a theoretical and practical guide for those who aspire to continue the path of Mimaros, Spatharis, Vassilaros and Manthos and even pages of laughter, hunger and glory from anecdotes, diaries, letters and other karagiozopaichte texts. And finally with three shows that combine the ancient and the present, the traditional with the original and the current. Victoria Karelia is the sponsor of the directory.
On August 2, the play “O Karagiozis An-Tracker”, written and directed by Iagos Andreadis, who is also the curator of the exhibition and the author and editor of the catalogue, will premiere in the theater of the OSE park. It is a transfer to what we call “Karagiozistika”, the ancient crusade drama of Sophocles, where humor and suspense, tenderness and social criticism predominate, as in the works with the hero “Xypolitos”. Topic: The satyrs Kolliteria undertake to capture Hermes, the thief of Apollo’s oxen, without compensation. They succeed with a thousand efforts for his own good because then Dias will recognize him as the god of thieves and liars and “minister of transport” in the government of Olympus.
Two distinguished masters play, Kostas and Babis Makris, representatives of two generations of creators, and Giannis Palmos, grandson of the great Giannaros (Yiannis Mourelatou). They will be joined by two elite performers, the mime performer Fanis Kafousias and the musical performer Pan Kapernekas who will perform eight instruments, with the ancient lyre dominant, the musical “protagonist” of the ancient and new “Trackers”. The play will be presented, among others, in Aigios on the 17th and in Patras at the Ancient Drama Festival on the 18th of September.
Two other great masters will interpret the performances of the next two days. Yiannis Dayakos, a worthy student of Spatharis and Manthos and author of important books about Karagiozis, will perform on August 3 the comic play “O Karagiozis magos” which reminds us of the dialogue of the Greek shadow theater with the world of the East. Tasos Georgiou, who studied under Manthos and other distinguished teachers and is a special presence in the world of shadow theater, will perform on August 4 the play “The Orphan of Chios and Captain Nikitaras”, a reference to the revolution of 1821.
Both works are faithful and at the same time original returns to the magical and historical element that have been a trademark of the Greek Karagiozis since the time of the great father Mimaros. They will be accompanied by a four-member orchestra of folk singers and instrumentalists consisting of Penny Georgopoulou, Sotiris Papageorgiou, Argyris Nikolaou and Dimitris Kranidas.
