American actor Alec Baldwin, 63, spoke for the first time to the press about the fatal accident at the filming location of the movie “Rust”. On October 21, director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, died after being shot from a gun handled by Baldwin, who was rehearsing a scene.
At the time, director Joel Souza was also injured. “Rust”, still without a release date after several delays, is an action western set in the US state of Kansas.
In an interview with journalist George Stephanopoulos, from the ABC channel, the actor claims that he did not pull the trigger on the gun. “The trigger wasn’t pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger, never,” he said, in an excerpt of the conversation released on Wednesday (1).
Baldwin was astonished at the presence of live ammunition on a cinematic set. When asked how the bullet got there, he replies, “I have no idea. Someone put a real bullet in the gun. A bullet that shouldn’t even be on that property.”
He also gets emotional when talking about Halyna Hutchins, who he describes as “someone who was loved by everyone who worked with her, adored and admired by everyone”. “So far, it’s hard to believe it happened. It doesn’t seem real to me,” he says of what happened.
The full interview will be broadcast on Thursday (2) on ABC News. Alec Baldwin and the production of “Rust” face two lawsuits related to the shooting, both filed by staff members. One calls the actor’s use of the weapon as “negligent”, and the other demands reparations for “intentional damage” and “emotional stress” caused by the incident.
