It takes its name from the sacrifices that the inhabitants of the Peloponnese made in the past in honor of the god Poseidon.
It is located at a very short distance from the port of Pylos and one could say that it functions as a natural breakwater in the bay of Navarino, helping with its particularly long and narrow shape as well as its position to create the largest natural port in the Peloponnese and one of the largest in the whole Greece. As for its area, it reaches only 3.2 sq.m.
It takes the name Factoryfrom the sacrifices made in the past by the inhabitants of the Peloponnese in honor of the god Poseidon.
Starting from the past, according to Homer, the fortress of the mythical king of Pylos, Nestor, was located at the northern end of the rock island, while during the Peloponnesian War bloody battles between the Spartans and the Athenians took place on the island.
Coming to more recent history, in April 1825 the Naval Battle of Navarino took place on the island, where the Greeks and the Philhellenic Europeans under the leadership of Mavrokordatus, fought against the Turkish-Egyptians of Ibrahim, in an unequal battle that ended with the defeat of the Greek forces and death of the Hydra campaigner Anastasios Tsamados, Sahini and the Italian philhellenic Count Santore Santarosa.
In the interior of the island in 1997, the church of Agios Nikolaos, dedicated to the Russian dead of the naval battle, as well as a monument to the fallen, was built according to the rules of the Russian architectural mentality, entirely of wood from the forests of Siberia. Near the Russian church there is another small church, the holy church of the Ascension also known as Panagoula, which according to tradition was rebuilt during Byzantine times by a nun, while in 1825 it was destroyed and rebuilt after the Liberation.
The beautiful sandy beaches of Sfaktiria bring to mind something exotic, while a walk in the interior of this verdant island brings the visitor face to face with history. And the view from its top is unique. Pylos and Niokastro, Chihli Baba and the entire bay of Navarino, spread out at your feet… and all you need is a little imagination to unfold right in front of you with the past.
