Bulgaria: Ballet premiere in Stara Zagora brings together young choreographers from Mexico and Greece

by

Marcelo Molina graduated from the National Ballet School of Cuba, Eleni Markou graduated from the Athens Dance Academy.

A performance based on a medieval tale about the kingdom of ‘Odon will make its premiere in Bulgaria. It is a story written for the Stara Zagora Opera, which will be presented by an international ballet company, as the young choreographers Marcelo Molina from Mexico and Eleni Markou from Greece said in an interview with the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). The two worked for several months on the two-act ballet that combines neoclassical, contemporary and modern dance, and is based on music by Australian composers Mark John McEnroe and Mark J. Saliba and in the libretto by Laura Goodin.

“Our idea was through dance to create the dialogue in this story that lasts one hour and 45 minutes. It is a story of dominance and power struggles in which we see arrogance, cruelty and lack of love,” said Marcelo Molina. “It’s all screaming, crowns and flashing guns,” Eleni Markou added.

For three years, the two have been members of the international ballet company in Stara Zagora, know very well the abilities of the artists and have been inspired by their struggle for innovation and experimentation in recreating a history that is distant in time and in the minds of the spectators.

Marcelo Molina graduated from the National Ballet School of Cuba, Eleni Markou graduated from the Athens Dance Academy.

“We have to note the extremely successful collaboration with set designer Vedchislav Petrov and costume designer Teodora Dzabarova, who exceeded our expectations,” said the Greek dancer.

“My special thanks to Silvia Tomova, the management and team of the Stara Zagora Opera, for allowing me to develop and show my talent in dance and choreography,” said the Mexican choreographer.

Eleni Markou also noted that she is very grateful to be a member of the international ballet company of the Stara Zagora Opera House led by Silvia Tomova. This group gives the opportunity to many young ballet dancers from all over the world to advance their careers and two of them to work as choreographers.

The performance “Odon” will premiere under the direction of the American conductor Anthony Armore at the Ancient Agora of Augusta Traiana on August 17th.
