Alec Baldwin must have pulled trigger on gun that killed director, FBI says

by

The gun that shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust” would not have fired had the trigger not been pulled. This is the conclusion of a report by the FBI, the investigative body of the United States government, released by the ABC News website.

The shooting took place while the gun was in the hand of Alec Baldwin, 64, and, in addition to killing Halyna, wounded director Joel Souza, 49, during filming in the US in October 2021. Baldwin denies pulling the trigger, although the conclusion of the FBI point out that he was fired while the gun was in the actor’s hand.

The report confirms the investigation’s initial theory that the actor pulled the trigger, as there was no way it could have been fired without the trigger. A member of the team working on the film said in a lawsuit late last year that at no point did the script call for a gun to be fired during a scene rehearsal with actor Alec Baldwin.

The actor believed he had a gun with no live ammunition when the shooting took place.

The company that produced ‘Rust’ was fined around $137,000 in April by the New Mexico Department of Occupational Health and Safety for an “intentional and serious” violation of on-set safety procedures.

The state secretary of the Environmental Cabinet said at the time that there were serious management failures with more than enough evidence to suggest that if standard industry practices had been followed, Halyna Hutchins’ fatal shooting and Joel Souza’s serious injury would not have occurred. .

“This is a complete failure by the employer to follow nationally recognized protocols that keep employees safe,” Kenney said.
