The launch date has not yet been set
The actress Nichelle Nicholsknown as Lt. Uhura on “Star Trek,” will become the last member of the 1960s television series to have her ashes travel into space.
Nichols, who died on July 30 at the age of 89, helped shatter racial stereotypes and redefine Hollywood roles for black actors at the height of the US civil rights movement.
She was one of the first black women to embody a “strong character” in a television series, as the “Guardian” newspaper writes.
The launch is being organized by Celestis Inc, a Texas-based company. The rocket that will carry some of Nichols’ ashes into space will also have a number of other vials of ashes and DNA samples from dozens of people who have had a similar wish. The launch date has not yet been set.
And the remains of other “Star Trek” actors and crew have been shared in space, including James Doohan and series creator Gene Roddenberry.
The list also includes renowned sci-fi visual effects artist Douglas Trumbull, whose work has appeared in films such as “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”
“It’s a wonderful memorial for her, an eternal memorial,” said Nichols’ son, Kyle Johnson.
