“We are here today to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Disaster. We are here to declare that we have not forgotten. We are here to honor the people, the refugees, the uprooted Hellenism. If a city should and should honor those events… if a city has a national and historical duty to keep the memory alive and the flame lit, it is Thessaloniki. The refugee Thessaloniki and Macedonia that welcomed the persecuted. The refugees, who with their industriousness and meritoriousness also restored Greece” stressed the mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, in his speech.
In addition, the Holy Diocese of Thessaloniki participated in the action with the mourning bell ringing in its Holy Temples during the event.
