The periodic exhibition of the Daughter of Thera – The statue of the 7th century BC was inaugurated at the Archaeological Museum of Thera. came to light in November 2000
In the presence of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the opening of the periodic exhibition of the Daughter of Thera – a “unique find that, for 22 years, remained in the warehouses” – was held at the Archaeological Museum of Thera, under renovation, as the minister emphasized in her greeting of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni.
The Daughter of Thera, a statue of the 7th century BC, came to light, in November 2000, during a rescue excavation in the cemetery of the ancient city of Thera, in southeastern Sellada, by Theraean archaeologist Charalambos Sigala.
The supernatural-sized archaic pupil of white Naxos marble, 2.48m high. with the inset peg at its base, it is almost intact. The sculpture, from which only the tip of the nose and the arm of the bent right hand resting on the chest are missing, is one of the few works of the great, distinguished early Greek sculpture in stone that have survived to the present day.
“In July 2020, we came here with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who promised that next year the frescoes would be exhibited at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which were also “imprisoned” in the warehouses. We did what we said. Last year the murals of Akrotiri were rendered. We said then that the archaeological museum, which had to follow modern museum standards, would be completely renovated. We have found the undivided support of the mayor and the Municipality, which, through a Programming Agreement, finances the project of restoring the museum. According to the planning we did in 2020, Santorini in 2023 will have both of its museums restored. Together with Akrotiri and a series of other interventions carried out on the island by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, Santorini is now registered as a very strong cultural destination of the Mediterranean”, added the minister in her greeting.

The mayor of Thiras, Antonis Sigalas, noted that “we must point out the consistency and efficiency of minister Linas Mendonis in terms of meeting the commitments she undertakes and thank her for her cooperation and contribution to our island. The Municipality of Thira, prioritizing the protection, promotion and utilization of the cultural stock of the island, has entered into a Program Agreement with the Ministry of Culture, which it finances with 630,000 euros. A sub-project of the Convention, with funding of 300,000 euros, concerns the works for the exhibition of the Daughter of Thera at the Archaeological Museum”.
The President of the Republic, accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, also visited the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, where she was guided to the museum’s exhibits and the wall paintings of Akrotiri by the head of the Cyclades Antiquities Authority, Dimitris Athanasoulis.
