An outdoor exhibition “sprung up” in the city center and tells the story of the 100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster

It is an initiative of the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, while the exhibition was curated by the museologist Nikolaos Nikoltsios

An outdoor exhibition consisting of eight huge banners telling young and old, residents and visitors, the story of 100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster “sprouted”this morning, in the center of Thessaloniki.

The banners, which depict moments from the Asia Minor campaign, the Asia Minor disaster and the entire history of the refugee, were placed on Agia Sophia Street, behind the statue of Chrysostom of Smyrna and are the “protagonists” of the outdoor exhibition, entitled “Leap times and angry months.”

It is an initiative of his Cultural Center of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, while the exhibition was curated by the museologist Nikolaos Nikoltsios. The historical material was chosen by the historian Evangelia Pallas, the texts were written by the historian as well George Skaltsogiannis, the photos are from the Archive of the War Museum and the collection of colonel e.a. Vassilis Nikoltsiou, while the title of the exhibition comes from his book of the same title George Manos.

The attendance of the people from the first hours when the huge banners were erected is large, while several parents stand with their children in order to explain to them, through the information and the image, the entire history of the Asia Minor Disaster, as told APE-MPE by exhibition advisor Vassilis Nikoltsios.

“People are impressed, but also surprised by all this information that exists next to them, on the road. He stands as long as he has time, while photographing aspects of history,” said Mr. Nikoltsios, emphasizing that the outdoor exhibition can also be a point of visit for schools in the center area at the start of the new school year.

The official opening will take place on Thursday, September 8, while the exhibition will have a “life” of about a month, with the aim of then being transferred to another outdoor space in the city.

For his part, the chairman of the Board of Directors at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Haris Aidonopoulos noted, speaking to APE-MBE, that “anyone who knows history, presents it so that there are no more crimes and other national losses”, while referring to the issue of guarding the outdoor exhibition, he added that he was asked to guarded by the Greek Police.
