A mass stabbing in an indigenous community in Canada has left 10 dead and at least 15 injured, prompting a major manhunt for two suspects.
Bodies or injuries were found at 13 crime scenes in Saskatchewan on Sunday.
Some victims are believed to have been targeted specifically, while others were accidentally stabbed in one of the deadliest murders in the country’s modern history.
After a 77-year-old mother of two and a widow died and were taken to hospital, more victims can be identified.
Images have been released of Damian Sanderson, 31, and Miles Sanderson, 30, named suspects by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It is believed that they were traveling in a black Nissan Rogue.
The public is warned to take appropriate action as knives remain unattended.
“Don’t leave a safe place. Be careful not to let anyone else into your home. Stay away from suspicious people. Do not collect parking lots,” police said.
The motive is unknown, but statements by local leaders suggest the attack may be drug-related.
“This is the devastation we face when harmful illegal drugs enter our communities,” said the Sovereign Indian Coalition, which represents Saskatchewan’s 74 indigenous peoples.
Additional resources have been deployed for ‘public safety’ as thousands of people flocked to nearby Regina on holidays for yesterday’s Canadian Soccer League game.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the violence “horrifying and heartbreaking” and said his thoughts are with the families of the victims.
Meanwhile, State Premier Scott Moy tweeted: “There are no words to adequately describe the pain and loss caused by this senseless violence.”
Saskatchewan health officials said patients were being treated at multiple locations.
“Additional staff have been called in to deal with the influx of casualties,” spokeswoman Ann Lineman said.
Ambulance services spokesman Mark O’Dunn said two helicopters were dispatched from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and one from Regina.
“What happened in our state today is horrible,” said Rhonda Blackmore, vice president of the RCMP Saskatchewan.
