SKAI’s great tribute to the completion of 100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster
THE Alexis Papahelas opens the file “Asia Minor” on the occasion of the centenary of Asia Minor Disaster and presents a revealing two-episode documentary.
In the first episodeon Monday September 12, entitled “Izmir, from brilliance to destruction”, Alexis Papachelas and his team travel to modern Izmir and search for the last traces of the cosmopolitan city and reveal the events that unfolded in the last two weeks of September 1922 with testimonies of people who lived in Smyrna in its glories but also in its destruction, such as Filio Chaidemenou, Ioanna Tsatsou, George Katramopoulos, Manolis Megaloikonomou, soldiers who fought at the front, etc.
At Smyrna they meet the Briton Giles Miltonauthor of the book “Paradise Lost” who researched in depth the last dramatic days of Smyrna, they walk in the historical Promenade and in the places where there were once Greek neighborhoods, they talk with the researchers Achillea Hatzikonstantinou and Giorgos Poulimenos, authors of the book “The Promenade of Smyrna » about the cosmopolitan city, they follow the path of the fatal fire and visit an old inn with traces of smoke that covered Smyrna.
They meet some of the last Levantines of Izmir who preserve the last traces of Christian presence in the city, they meet the Turkish historian Erkan Serce who gives his own view of the destruction, they reveal the dramatic events of the last days and shed light on the fates of the two powerful men and opponents, Metropolitan Chrysostomos who was martyred in Smyrna and High Commissioner Aristides Stergiadis.
In the second episodeon Tuesday, September 13, titled “The big “ifs” of History” we pose the great questions of the Asia Minor Catastrophe that still divide historians and researchers. Was Venizelos’ decision to send an army to Smyrna in 1919 correct? Did the 1920 election change the outcome of the campaign? Could the destruction of Smyrna have been avoided? Was the Trial of the Six fair?
Leading Greek and foreign historians and researchers pose and answer the above questions and talk about the attitude of the allies, the scenario of claiming Constantinople, the role of King Constantine but also about the two great protagonists of History, Eleftherios Venizelos and Ioannis Metaxas.
The documentary “Asia Minor” features (alphabetically) the historians, academics and researchers: Vlasis Agzidis (Historian), Thanos Veremis (Emeritus Professor of the University of Athens), Paschalis Kitromilidis (Emeritus Professor of the University of Athens), Antonis Klapsis (Assistant Professor of the University of Peloponnese), Kostas Kostis (Professor at the University of Athens), Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith (former British Ambassador to Greece), Giles Milton (Author), Giorgos Mavrogordatos (former Professor at the University of Athens), Iakovos Michaelidis (Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaly), Konstantina Botsiou, (Professor at the University of Piraeus), Spyridon Ploumidis (Associate Professor at the University of Athens), Giorgos Poulimenos (Researcher, Author), Sotiris Rizas (Director of Research, Academy of Athens), Tasos Sakellaropoulos (Historian, Head of Historical Archives of the Benaki Museum), Erkan Sertse ( Professor Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi), Victoria Solomonidou (Lecturer University College London), Kostas Stamatopoulos (Historian), Evanthis Chatzivasiliou (Professor at the University of Athens), Achilleas Chatzikonstantinou (Researcher, Author).
