The American actor Leonard Nimoy he will forever be known to the world as Star Trek’s iconic Spock, a half-Earth and half-alien from the planet Vulcan, yet the actor himself was of Ukrainian descent.
However, Nimoy was not just Spock, even in the eyes of the most ardent Star Trek fans, but a multifaceted personality. He was an actor, but also a husband and father, a writer, a photographer and believe it or not a singer. He lived a full life and prospered throughout.
Leonard Simon Nimoy was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1931. His parents, Max and Dora, were Jewish Ukrainian immigrants who made their way to America from Izyaslav of Ukraine. Their journey was not easy.
The adventurous escape
Max and Dora did not leave Iziaslav together. Max escaped the Soviet Union alone and crossed to Poland to find his freedom. Leonard’s mother and grandmother escaped the Soviets in a carriage. They found their freedom by sneaking across the border, hiding under hay bales.
“A kid for all jobs”
Leonard helped his father by first selling newspapers and greeting cards. Being a “jack of all trades” he also brought in some money shining shoes or even setting up chairs in theaters. Growing up, Leonard helped his father for a living by selling vacuum cleaners.
His parents also wanted Leonard to play the accordion, knowing his musical talent. It was Leonard’s grandfather who convinced him to pursue the career that would make him happy, that of acting.
