The European Film Academy (EFA) included the White Tower in the list of Treasures of European Film Heritage, Treasures of European Film Culture.
The White Tower, a monument of our Byzantine cultural heritage, a landmark of Thessaloniki, was a natural cinematic setting for the film “Landscape in the Fog” by Theodoros Angelopoulos in 1988, making the city of Thessaloniki known to the international cinema audience through the leading Greek filmmaker.
The list of Treasures of the European Cinematic Heritage is an action of the EFA, included in the framework of its initiatives for the creation of a pan-European network of cinematographic heritage. Film libraries, film archives and film organizations are connected to this network, with the aim of distributing and using information about anniversaries and events that highlight and promote European cinema and its creators, as well as the action of institutional organizations that shape the strategy of cinema industry in European countries.
The systematic and long-standing cooperation of the Hellenic Film Center (HFC), as well as its Directorate for International Audiovisual Productions – Hellenic Film Commission (HFC) with EFA has made a decisive contribution to the promotion of the cinematographic and in general cultural stock of Greece and the turning of the gaze of European cinema towards our country.
EFA’s decision on the White Tower was the result of its cooperation with the Greek Cypriot Greek Association and HFC, which for this purpose coordinated relevant actions with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki and the family of Theodoros Angelopoulos. The list of Treasures of the European Cinematic Heritage includes locations that have become symbolic for European cinema. Sites and landmarks of historical value that need protection now and in the future.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, the White Tower is now one of 35 iconic film locations and landmarks, including the Limière Institute in Lyon, France, the Potemkin Stairs in Odessa, Ukraine , the Plaza de España in Seville, the Bergman Center in Faro Island, Sweden, the Casa Rossa in Stromboli, Italy, the Café des Deux Moulins in Paris.
