Colombian singer Shakira, 45, broke the silence and spoke for the first time about separation after 11 years of union with Barcelona player Gérard Piqué, 35, to Elle magazine. He took up the relationship with public relations Clara Chia Marti, 23, after their marriage ended in June.
Shakira said her children Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, are her “medicine” and writing music is like going to a psychiatrist, only cheaper. “I feel like at this point in my life, which is probably one of the hardest and darkest hours of my life, music has brought light.”
According to her, music and the love of family and children are definitely some of the few tools she has to survive extreme situations. “It just helps me process my emotions and make sense of them. And it helps me heal.”
Asked how she dealt with not being “together” with Piqué, whom she met in 2010, Shakira replied: “I can only say that I put everything I had into that relationship and into my family.”
Shakira said that before her children started going to school, she had a nomadic life as an artist and traveled non-stop, touring and recording in different countries and building schools in Colombia.
“I put my career on the back burner and came to Spain to support him so he could play football and win titles. And it was a sacrifice of love. Thanks to that, my children were able to have a mother present,” he said.
The singer stated that her priority now is to work together with Piqué in raising their children regardless of how things ended up between them. “I have faith that we will find out what is best for their future, their own dreams in life and what is a fair solution for everyone involved.”
Shakira met Gerard after he appeared in the video for her song “Waka Waka”, released for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
