The olive tree in Lesbos: Virtual reality exhibition on olive oil production techniques

It is an interactive exhibition through which the history of the olive tree, its relationship with the landscape and the timeless evolution of the olive oil production techniques applied over time on the olive-growing island of Lesvos are presented.

An alien exhibition on the olive tree through the ages is underway at the Natural History Museum of the Lesbos Petrified Forest.

It is the exhibition “The Olive in Lesbos” in which the timeless techniques of olive oil production are represented using virtual and augmented reality technologies.

The exhibition highlights the culture of the olive and the technology of its processing for the production of olive oil through an impressive presentation of images, exhibits, audio-visual material and virtual reality digital applications.

It is an interactive exhibition through which the history of the olive tree, its relationship with the landscape and the timeless evolution of the olive oil production techniques applied over time on the olive-growing island of Lesvos are presented. It should be noted that the olive groves are a distinct element of the Lesbian landscape, with a long history, high environmental and economic importance, forming an integral part of the local tradition and the identity of the inhabitants, classifying the olive and oil among the recognizable elements of the island’s identity.

The exhibition includes two main sections, which focus on “olive culture” and “olive technology”.

The first section is divided into four individual subsections about the olive plant, the landscapes of Elia in Lesvos, with its olives and olive groves. The olive in art and culture, as well as its gastronomy, constitute the other two subsections that are an integral part of its culture.

The second large section of the exhibition is dedicated to olive technology, olive mills with different olive oil production mechanisms and their different operating periods.

The exhibition takes place within the framework of the Action “OLIVE: A representation of the timeless techniques of olive oil production in Lesvos, using Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality” technologies, which has been included in the NSRF 2014-2022 – Operational Program “Competitiveness Entrepreneurship and Innovation” of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology. It is co-organized by the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos, the Sound Image and Cultural Representation Laboratory of the Department of Cultural Technology of the University of the Aegean and “AEGIO SOLUTIONS”.
