Which characters you will never see using… iPhones in the cinema

In television and cinema you will see what is called ‘product placement’. Companies often license entertainment content productions to use their products, for a small fee or even a pittance for promotional purposes. Case in point?

Bond. James Bond. This agent has a “license to kill”, and a license to use… iPhones. But which movie characters will you never see using Apple’s cell phones or any other Apple product?

Products of Apple are extremely common in entertainment shows or movies, and is very happy to provide MacBooks, iPads and iPhones to studios, but there is a unique condition.

According to Bloomberg, Apple doesn’t pay for product placement, at least not with money. Instead, it provides its devices to studios for free as “props” (fake or real products for productions). Apple even provided the sitcom Modern Family with the first iPad two days before it became available at retail. However, the free devices provided come with some “requests” from Apple. So Apple doesn’t want “bad guys” using iPhones. The revelation was made by director Ryan Jones while talking about his film Knives Out., noting that this is how you can tell if a character is bad or not.

Apple has never specifically said that “bad characters can’t use an iPhone,” but its official guidelines say that an Apple product should “only be displayed under the best conditions.”

What can we do we conclude from all this? The Cupertino company naturally wants its products to appear in movies and TV shows as a normal part of people’s lives. But it doesn’t hurt viewers to associate iPhones with… “good guys”.

So the next time you watch a mystery movie, pay attention to mobile phones used by the suspects. It might be the best clue as to who the killer is in the film…
