We are in the middle of autumn in the forest of Lailia, Serres, which consists mainly of beeches and forest pine.
The forest of Lailias is one of the most beautiful forests of Northern Greece and is 25 km from Serres. It occupies the Vrontos mountain range, while deer, wild boars, as well as a small population of brown bears are included in its rare fauna.
Its name is supposed to come from a corruption of the Turkish word Yailas which means place of rest. A well-known place for tourists to visit is the rock of Katiga. It is a huge rock at the edge of a ravine, from which, according to tradition, the tragic girl committed suicide, in order to avoid marrying a Muslim.
The remarkable Ski Center of Lailias is located at an altitude of 1600 meters. It has a main track one kilometer long and 70 meters wide, while there is a second track with a higher difficulty index. A unique experience is the night descents with the help of proper lighting.
The orange color dominates, giving the landscape something special! More than 500 species of plants have been recorded in the flora of Lailias, while many mammals and birds find refuge in the area.
