Opinion – Tony Goes: Why does Claudia Raia’s pregnancy bother so many people?

A week ago, Claudia Raia and Jarbas Homem de Mello announced on Instagram that the actress is expecting her third child. A pregnancy that took everyone by surprise, including the couple: after all, Claudia is 55 years old (and will be 56 when the baby is born) and has passed menopause. How can such a thing?

Much was speculated in the following days about this late pregnancy. The actress would have frozen her eggs and done in vitro fertilization, and would be lying when implying that she became pregnant naturally. As was more than expected, Claudia received messages of support from many people, but she was also the target of cruel criticism. Why, anyway? What did she do so wrong?

“Irresponsible”, complained some netizens. “Rich white woman,” muttered others, as if this were a crime. There were even those who accused her of having unprotected sex with her own husband.

Here in Sheet, columnist Cristiane Gercina, of the blog Colo de Mãe, wrote that Claudia Raia “does a disservice” to women who cannot get pregnant, by not revealing her “success technique”. “At 55, the chances of a natural pregnancy are practically nil”, Cristiane said.

Well, “practically” doesn’t mean it’s impossible. And it wasn’t: in an interview with Fantástico this Sunday (25), Claudia revealed that, even after menopause, she still had three eggs in her tubes. It is a very rare case, confirmed by his doctors. For this very reason, it does not serve as an example for anyone.

What serves is the excitement of Claudia and Jarbas, who will be parents at a time when they could already be grandparents. Adept at a healthy lifestyle, the actress is in top shape, and appears to have all the physical and psychological conditions to take care of a child for the next few years.

That same exuberance of Claudia Raia may help to explain the wave of hatred that hit her. Her natural talent was blessed with a great deal of luck, and today she is a successful, happily married, financially secure woman and mother of two beautiful children. Claudia “ticked” all the boxes in the happiness test. As if that wasn’t enough, she and Jarbas were awarded in the last edition of the Bibi Ferreira Award, which highlights the best in theater in São Paulo.
