On the slopes of Karavoula at an altitude of 750 meters, in the prefecture of Trikala, there is a small village, which until today has been moved at least 40 meters lower on the slope on which it is built. This strange phenomenon has made the village “famous” for the image it presents, which without exaggeration is very impressive. But the reality never ceases to sadden the visitor with the power of nature, and this is because the phenomenon of landslides that have been affecting the village for 60 years is simply the reality of everyday people who from one moment to the next saw the labors of an entire of life to be lost in tons of mud.
It all started a full 55 years ago, when the loose ground gradually began to recede in Ropoto of Trikala. No one would then be able to understand the magnitude of the problem that would be created.
It was April 12, 2012 that one of its most devastating landslides occurred. On that day, the houses that remained standing rolled almost intact down the slope a few tens of meters below. The rest were cut in two or completely destroyed, creating the most eerie sight imaginable. The mud swallowed almost the entire village without a trace of pride or emotion.
