Schinas: Our religious traditions must be considered part of our cultural life

Tomorrow, Friday 10 December, at the request of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Vice-President for the Promotion of the European Lifestyle Margaritis Schoinas has convened an extraordinary high-level meeting with leaders of major European religions and organizations. The purpose of the meeting is to reaffirm the Commission’s commitment to dialogue with churches and religious organizations and their important role in the European project.

The Vice-President of the Commission stated that “respect for all religions and beliefs is a fundamental value of the European Union. “Our common values ​​and identity should be based on the recognition of different identities and diversity, including religious, that make up our Union.”

He added that “religious traditions can and should be considered part of our cultural life. “Religious holidays are moments of sharing and opening up to others and should be seen as a time where different people of faith – as well as people unrelated – can come together.”

The meeting will be attended by representatives from seven major European communities: Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists. The meeting also takes place online and in the context of the Article 17 dialogue, which serves as a platform for dialogue with churches, religious associations or communities, philosophical and non-denominational organizations on EU policies.
