In the conversion of his house Yannis Ritsou, in the Kastropolitia of Monemvasia, a Municipal Museum, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Region of Peloponnese and the Municipality of Monemvasia are proceeding, through a Cultural Development Program Agreement. The project, which is funded by Ministry of Defenseis implemented, under the supervision of its competent services, by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia and the Directorate of Newer Cultural Heritage.
As announced by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the collaboration for the creation of an exhibition space dedicated to Yiannis Ritsos, one of the most emblematic personalities of modern Greek poetry, was highlighted during the autopsy carried out by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, at the poet’s home and at monuments of Kastropolitia. The purpose of the project “Conversion of the house of Giannis Ritsou in the Castle of Monemvasia into a Municipal Museum” is to create an exhibition space to present the personality of the poet and his relationship with his birthplace, Monemvasia.
In the permanent exhibition, the life and work of the poet will be presented, through selected emblematic, for each section, poems, constituting a station in the Greek and international literary heritage. The connection with the historical past, the strengthening of the collective memory and the awareness of the residents of the Municipality of Monemvasia in matters of highlighting the History of their place and their culture are the main objectives of the design proposal of the exhibition, contributing in the long term to the sustainable development of the area.
The scope of the contract includes the necessary museological and museographic studies and the general work of shaping and converting the house into the Yiannis Ritsou Museum. The poet’s different look at Monemvasia, which the exhibition will offer, will contribute to the promotion and highlighting of this historically emblematic place. In a modern digital, interactive and entertaining way, it will enrich the cultural identity of the municipality, becoming a pole for attracting visitors.
