The designer was elected the new president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and succeeds Tom Ford.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) today officially announced that Tom Brown has been elected as its president.

Brown succeeds Tom Ford, who served as CFDA president for three years and announced earlier this year that he is stepping down, with his term beginning January 1, 2023.

Brown’s new role as the next president is to guide the organization through the rapidly changing fashion climate.

“I am very excited to take on the presidency of the CFDA. I feel a tremendous responsibility to work with Stephen and the CFDA team to continue the positive and important work of Tom Ford, Diane von Furstneberg, and Stan Herman. I also feel it is important to give back to an industry that has supported me so much over the past 20 years. I’m so proud to be an American designer…there’s so much going on in American design today that people really need to see and recognize and really appreciate.”

Brown created his own eponymous brand in 2003 with five gray suits in a bespoke clothing store in New York’s West Village. Since then, Tom Brown has become an example for American tailoring, with his own distinctive aesthetic.

He joined the CFDA in 2005 and has won the CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year award three times, in 2006, 2013 and 2016.

Brown, whose business was acquired by Zegna in 2018, emphasized the importance of fostering designers’ creativity and innovation.
