The negative effects of blue light on the skin are well known. However, most of us will have at least one screen in front of us before going to sleep.
Whether you’re scrolling a bit on social media or catching up with your favorite series on your TV, tablet or laptop, you’re probably using a screen before bed. And, most likely, you are not using any kind of protection on your skin right now. As negligible as it may seem, this habit can be very harmful to the skin. Below, we explain why.
What is blue light?
Starting with the basics, blue light is the spectrum of visible light that has a wavelength of 500 to 600 nanometers. In fact, its three most common sources are the sun, digital monitors and skin care devices. As for the latter, it can be used to treat acne because it kills bacteria.
But how does it affect the skin?
Although not yet studied in depth, existing studies show that light blue increases redness, swelling and hyperpigmentation of the skin, especially in those with darker skin. Also, long-term exposure to blue light reduces collagen levels. This results in the premature appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Because we would all like to avoid the above consequences, it is worth taking the appropriate protection measures.
Initially, you may have seen the so-called market blue light glasses, designed to protect your eyes. These glasses are a particularly good investment if you spend many hours in front of a screen, as blue light also damages the eyes. Another simple and popular alternative is sunscreen. Another reason, then, not to neglect its daily application. Because not all sunscreens protect against blue light, choose one with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or iron oxide.
What is the best way to protect yourself before bed?
During the day you wear glasses and sunscreen and protect your eyes and skin. But what happens as you scroll through your bed at night? One solution is to apply a little sunscreen at night at the end of your treatment routine. Alternatively, you can use an antioxidant product in your evening routine. For example, a serum with vitamin C is a must for the evening! Not only does it have many other benefits but it will also protect you from the negative effects of blue light. Finally, the best way to protect yourself is to try to reduce your exposure to blue light.
So instead of scrolling through Instagram at night or watching a Netflix series, opt for reading a book or doing some other non-screen relaxing activity.
